Premiere - Adding Video Transitions

Now that I have added Audio Transitions to my trailer I started to add video transitions to make each clip run more smoothly. As you can see in my previous blog post I looked at a wide range of different video transitions and then made conclusions as to which worked and which didn't. From this I have now begun to add the best transitions (in my opinion) to my DVD trailer.

The first transition I added was between the second and third video clip, these were both title clips. I decided to use the Cross Dissolve transition, this was based on the fact that it gave a smooth and professional movements from one clip to the next. I added this to my timeline by dragging the transition over to the clip. The full details of how I add transitions to clips can be seen in the blog post: Premiere - Video Transitions. The screenshot below shows the changes I made to the default settings of this transitions. I firstly shortened the transitions as these clips were only short themselves and had the transition been too long you would have barely been able to see the clip itself. I then changed the positioning of the transition. I moved this into the first clip more than the second clip, this was because the second clip was much smaller/shorter and hence you barely had chance to read the title properly because it was always transitioning.

The second transition I added was to the next clip along, this was between clip three and four. This was a transition between a title and a video clip. The transition I chose to use was Additive Dissolve. The screenshot below shows the settings used for this transition. I left these to default. This was because the transition worked well and looked effective without me adjusting anything and hence I saw no need to change this.

The third transition I added was between the forth and fifth clips. This transition was between video clip and video clip. I personally found these transitions a lot smoother and easier to work with. The transition I decided to use was Additive Dissolve. The screenshot below shows the settings used for this transition. I left these to default. This was because the transition worked well and looked effective without me adjusting anything and hence I saw no need to change this.

The forth transition I added was to the next clip along, this was hence clips 5 and 6. This transition was between video clip and video clip. I personally found these transitions a lot smoother and easier to work with. The transition I decided to use was Film Dissolve. The screenshot below shows the settings used for this transition. I decided to reduce the time the transition ran into the sixth clip as this clip had vital footage at the very beginning and to begin with I found the transition took too much of this away.

The fifth transition I added was to the next clip along, this was hence clips 6 and 7. This transition was between video clip and video clip. The transition I decided to use was Cross Dissolve. The screenshot below shows the settings used for this transition. The two clips which I applied this transition too were both long in terms of time and hence I decided to increase the length of time for the transitions. I doubled this from the default settings.

The sixth transition I added was to the next clip along, this was hence clips 7 and 8. This transition was between video clip and video clip. The transition I decided to use was Additive Dissolve. The screenshot below shows the settings used for this transition. I left these to default. This was because the transition worked well and looked effective without me adjusting anything and hence I saw no need to change this.

The seventh transition I added was to the next clip along, this was hence clips 8 and 9. This transition was between video clip and video clip. The transition I decided to use was Iris Cross. This is a transition I hadn't used yet. I decided to add this transition to add some diversity as so far I had stuck to just a few and alternated. The screenshot below shows the settings used for this transition. I left these to default. This was because the transition worked well and looked effective without me adjusting anything and hence I saw no need to change this.

The eighth transition I added was between the 9th and 10th clip. This was a transition between video clip and title. I decided that for this reason I would chose the Dip To White transition as this would go nicely with the white background of the title clip. The screenshot below shows the settings used for this transition. I left these to default. This was because the transition worked well and looked effective without me adjusting anything and hence I saw no need to change this.

The ninth transition was added between the 10th and 11th clip. This was a transition between title and video. The transition I decided to use was Cross Dissolve. This was due to its simply yet effective nature. The screenshot below shows the settings used for this transition. I left these to default.

The tenth transition I added to my timeline was between clips 11 and 12. The transition was between video clip and video clip. The transition I decided to use was Cross Dissolve. This was due to its simply yet effective nature. The screenshot below shows the settings used for this transition. As you can see the length of time this transition runs for is very short, this is because my two clips are very short and hence any longer would take up the whole clip which is defeating the object of a transition.

The eleventh transition I added was between clips 15 and 16. You can see from this that I had a gap with no transitions. This is mainly because the clips between these sections were very small and hence I didn't think these were needed. The transition was between video clip and video clip. The transition I decided to use was Cross Dissolve. The screenshot below shows the settings used for this transition. As you can see the length of time this transition runs for is very short, this is because my two clips are very short and hence any longer would take up the whole clip which is defeating the object of a transition.

The twelfth transition I added was between clips 16 and 17.  The transition was between video clip and title. The transition I decided to use was Additive Dissolve. The screenshot below shows the settings used for this transition. I left these to default. This was because the transition worked well and looked effective without me adjusting anything and hence I saw no need to change this.

The final transition I added to my trailer was between clips 17 and 18. This transition was between title and video. The transition I decided to use was Cross Dissolve. The screenshot below shows the settings used for this transition. I left these to default.
